August is a month for Prompts #25
8/25: Fill the Gap
“Why’d I let you talk me into going to a Puzzle Planet? Who thought this was a good idea? Who’s calling the shots around here?”
All of the Hummingbirds stopped behind the captain and watched as his long winded tirade came to an end. None of them said anything, they all knew much like their captain that he is the reason for visiting the planet in the first place.
He whipped around and growled, “No ones got anything to say huh? Twenty-two of you and not one with a clue. What’s wrong with you?”
He turned away from them, he began to pace back and forth across the barren landscape. The wind howled as it moved through the empty space before them. The stench of moist fabric filled the air and drove him batty.
“How do I fill a gap with nothing at my disposal?”
The Hummingbirds stared at their captain, all of them exhausted from their travels and battles fought until they reached this point. No one had eaten, slept, or rested for forty-eight hours and it started to have physical and mental effects.
“Why not just fill it with you?” Belinda suggested
Mine was about to snap back when he realized she was on to something. He approached the vast emptiness that spread out before them. He took a deep breath and jumped into the space. All twenty-two of the Hummingbirds rushed to the edge to learn their captain's fate.
From the abyss, like a pot boiling over, millions upon billions of different versions of Mine flooded the space. At the center of a geyser of Mine hoisted the original into the sky.
He opened his arms and said, “More of me! What could be better? Come now dear, I’ve found the way out.”
The Hummingbirds stepped off the cliff and onto the rigid clones of their captain. The squelch of flesh being stepped on and the occasional groan was enough to make them all cringe with each step. Mine hadn’t moved, he watched fondly as they stepped on his clones.
Snap!
All the different versions of Mine disappeared instantly and the twenty-two Hummingbirds plummeted into the abyss of the Puzzle Planet. Mine’s laugh reverberated off the walls and suddenly went silent. The Hummingbirds grew concerned when a bright light exploded from below. They were all transported to an all white room with tall floor to ceiling windows. A loud automated voice boomed from speakers along the wall.
“Well done Hummingbirds! You’ve completed the puzzle. Here is your reward.”
A tile shifted on the floor and a trophy rose from the ground. Mine looked up and down the hall waiting for some grand prize, he approached the trophy.
“Congratulations you’ve successfully escaped Puzzle Planet. Winner
#2,065,876”
Mine’s malevolent aura spilled from his being, the Hummingbirds followed his lead and unleashed malicious, threatening, and stifling auras of their own.
“Let’s pollinate this planet with chaos and destruction. We may not have been first but we will be the last!Let’s begin dear.”
