August is a month for Prompts # 5

8/5: Sesame

“They tiptoed through the cavernous hall towards the open maw of the lion’s head shaped door.”

Snap!

“The door slammed shut before the forty bandits and asked for the password. However, none of them knew what to say. The journey had already been arduous and there was no turning back, the only way out was to move forward.”

“Like Flow?” Penelope asked with her big brilliant orange heart shaped irises gleaming with anticipation.

“Yes, just like Flow.”

“So what happened next!”

“Ah, the first thief of the forty stepped forward. He was thin, dexterous, and agile. He was known for picking locks and his sleight of hand. Before he could even speak the lion headed door sneezed and blew him away.”

Penelope giggled, “Bye-bye bandit!”

“One after another they failed to open the door. There was no food, no water, nothing but the heat of the underground and the bridge that collapsed after they barely managed to cross it.”

“Did they die?”

“No, of course not. While the bandits put their heads together and tried their best, it  seemed to be an impossible task.”

“So how’d they get out? Did they get the treasure?”

“I was getting to that Sweet Pea.”

Penelope loved her nickname, which made her smile.

“Anyway, while the bandits called out one thing after another a small voice said-“

“Open Sesame!” Sweet Pea yelled out.

The forty bandits turned to see Penelope holding a large book in her hands. She waved at them and said, “Hi.”

The bandits had no idea where the little girl had come from. Her clothes were untouched by the dirt and grime that surrounded them. Her bright red hair was like fire wrapped in two neat buns and her horn rimmed glasses looked more like horns to them. Everything about her was wrong and without a moment’s hesitation the bandits drew their swords.

Sweet Pea’s eyebrows shot up and she slammed the book shut.

She plopped on the floor and was greeted by her grandfather’s undeniable guffaw. He wheezed and howled and held his chest as he tried to calm his laughter, “This is why I love reading to you.”

“That’s not funny Grandpa,” Sweet Pea chimed, “They were gonna get me.”

“I’ve told you countless times a book isn’t good unless it sucks you in.”

“Yeah, but normal people don’t literally get sucked into a book because they like it.”

“It’s good training, having the sway, I think therefore I am, is a big responsibility. If you can get pulled into a book that means-“

“I can get pulled into anything,” Sweet Pea sighed, “You always tell me this.”

“Because it’s my responsibility to guide you.”

“Fine, guide me to the candy store old man,” she demanded with a giggle and a wriggle.

“How about another book?”

“No way,” Sweet Pea said as she headed for the door, “Open Sesame!”

The door opened and she skipped out and disappeared. He started to chuckle and snapped his fingers, “Oh dear, might I remind you who I am?”

Penelope reappeared beside him and said, “Sorry Grandpa Mine.”

“It’s alright dear, the next one is my favorite,” he waved his hand and another book floated in front of her.

“Mine Imagination, Flight of the Hummingbirds?”

“Yes dear, it’s the story of how I conquered Tucy and found my way home.”
